This portal is to open public enhancement requests against IBM System Storage products. To view all of your ideas submitted to IBM, create and manage groups of Ideas, or create an idea explicitly set to be either visible by all (public) or visible only to you and IBM (private), use the IBM Unified Ideas Portal (https://ideas.ibm.com).
We invite you to shape the future of IBM, including product roadmaps, by submitting ideas that matter to you the most. Here's how it works:
Start by searching and reviewing ideas and requests to enhance a product or service. Take a look at ideas others have posted, and add a comment, vote, or subscribe to updates on them if they matter to you. If you can't find what you are looking for,
Post an idea.
Get feedback from the IBM team and other customers to refine your idea.
Follow the idea through the IBM Ideas process.

When a storagepool is based on a server type
device class (i.e. virtual volumes), it is
difficult to reduce the number of volumes
using move data commands. This is because
when the input volume is done, the process
ends and the output volume is closed and
marked full.
MOVE DATA is used instead of reclaim because
the remote server stores the virtual volumes
on tape and most of the tapes are not in the
library. The source server storage pool is a
copypool so the cost can't be justified to
have a large enough tape library to keep all
the tape volumes resident. Therefore, the
sensible way to simulate a reclaim is to do
move data commands in the source server in
time order.
IMPLEMENTATION SUGGESTION.
Enhance the MOVE DATA command to use a
criteria value to select volumes. Continue
writing to the output virtual volume until
all the input volumes have been processed or
it reaches the maxcap value.
Please see the previous RFE about CRITERIA objects.

Hi,
now that 6.3 is announced, and having read the announcement letter,
I see the DR enhancements you spoke of. But, implementing this
would be a HUGH step up in complexity and COST. The functionality
is not something we need at the time.
I understand that my current use of virtual volumes is not a useable
DR site, but I never planned on having that. I just want protection
against bad primary media and hash collisions. I should be able to
consolidate many low utilized volumes into one fully utilized volume
just like I can do with real tapes.
Please reconsider this RFE and continue to add enhancements for
for users who aren't ready or don't needd the latest, most functional
deployment.
Thanks,
Bill Colwell
Thank you for submitting this enhancement request, we do understand the requirement and the rationale behind it but unfortunately we currently do not plan to implement this enhancement request for virtual volumes, the next release of TSM will include some functionality that will address DR scenarios more efficiently
Attachment (Use case): Information from the source and target servers to show my current process and how much easier it would be with the enhancement.
