IBM System Storage Ideas Portal

This portal is to open public enhancement requests against IBM System Storage products. To view all of your ideas submitted to IBM, create and manage groups of Ideas, or create an idea explicitly set to be either visible by all (public) or visible only to you and IBM (private), use the IBM Unified Ideas Portal (https://ideas.ibm.com).

Shape the future of IBM!

Better handling of fragments during backup storagepool

When copying data to a copy pool, all (or large parts of) the copied data can be rolled back, if some - but not all - fragments of a super-aggregate is among the copied data. This can happen if the backup storagepool process is deliberately stopped (to perform other maintenance), or if the process is stopped by a higher priority operation (eg. a client needing a tape drive for a restore).
If we have large amounts of data that needs to be copied to copy pool, we can only be sure to accomplish this, if we ensure that backup storagepool processes keeps running until they successfully ends - in some cases this can mean processes running for more than a week.
A functionality is needed to make this task less "vulnerable". There can be a number of ways to achieve this. One suggestion is to add an option to the BACKUP STGPOOL command (could be: GROUPFRAGMENTS=YES), telling the process that, when it finds a fragment of a super-aggregate, it has to backup all fragments of that super-aggregate before proceeding to other data. Probably the process should also commit the copied data "along the way", so that only the current file (or the current super-aggregate) has to be rolled back, if the process for any reason is cancelled.
