IBM System Storage Ideas Portal

This portal is to open public enhancement requests against IBM System Storage products. To view all of your ideas submitted to IBM, create and manage groups of Ideas, or create an idea explicitly set to be either visible by all (public) or visible only to you and IBM (private), use the IBM Unified Ideas Portal (https://ideas.ibm.com).

Shape the future of IBM!

We invite you to shape the future of IBM, including product roadmaps, by submitting ideas that matter to you the most. Here's how it works:

Search existing ideas

Start by searching and reviewing ideas and requests to enhance a product or service. Take a look at ideas others have posted, and add a comment, vote, or subscribe to updates on them if they matter to you. If you can't find what you are looking for,

Post your ideas
  1. Post an idea.

  2. Get feedback from the IBM team and other customers to refine your idea.

  3. Follow the idea through the IBM Ideas process.

backup stgpool parallelization

I would request to have backup stgpool of a source pool of type=disk parallelized either on a per volume base (as backup stgpool acts if the source pool is of type=file) or on the amount of data to process.

When running backup stgpool with a source pool of type disk processes are splitted up by node.
So if you have one large node on a tsm server you end up with only one backup stgpool process running, because all other processes you might have started are finished in a short time.

This has already been requested for aix in rfe 41589 in 2013 based on pmr 50265,085,000 by another user and denied by development.

I think that the workaround proposed by development using type=file is not usable because of three open APARs on type=file as primary storagepool. First a primary filepool will tell a TSM-Client its full if only one file-volume is full because TSM-Clients do not reconsider using a different volume if one is filled up. Second a restore/retrieve request for a file backed up or archived might get denied with "no objects on server match query" if the request is issued at an unpleasant time for the TSM-Server. Third if a primary file pool gets full tsm is unable to write to a next-pool and denies backup/archive requests.

IBM has evaluated the request, and has determined that it can not be implemented at this time or does not align with the current multi-year strategy. This request may be resubmitted for consideration after 18 months from the date of submission. The request submitter will automatically be notified by email when the request qualifies for reconsideration and resubmission.

Due to processing by IBM, this request was reassigned to have the following updated attributes:
Brand - Servers and Systems Software
    Product family - Storage
Product - Tivoli Storage Manager (TSM) Family

For recording keeping, the previous attributes were:
    Brand - Tivoli
    Product family - Storage
Product - Tivoli Storage Manager (TSM) Family
