IBM System Storage Ideas Portal

This portal is to open public enhancement requests against IBM System Storage products. To view all of your ideas submitted to IBM, create and manage groups of Ideas, or create an idea explicitly set to be either visible by all (public) or visible only to you and IBM (private), use the IBM Unified Ideas Portal (https://ideas.ibm.com).

Shape the future of IBM!

We invite you to shape the future of IBM, including product roadmaps, by submitting ideas that matter to you the most. Here's how it works:

Search existing ideas

Start by searching and reviewing ideas and requests to enhance a product or service. Take a look at ideas others have posted, and add a comment, vote, or subscribe to updates on them if they matter to you. If you can't find what you are looking for,

Post your ideas
  1. Post an idea.

  2. Get feedback from the IBM team and other customers to refine your idea.

FILE volume locking

During the migration or stgpool backup of a FILE class storage pool, the process will 'hang' when it encounters a locked volume. The volume will remain locked if there is a long-running backup session or the client does not terminate correctly. If the pool requires migration during a backup window, this will lead to backups failing as the storage pool continues to fill and cannot empty.

It is not known if this will happen during reclamation and/or deduplication, but this can all lead to catastrophic results since none of the back-end processes will finish because of one rogue node.

If a FILE volume is locked, the processes should move to the next volume. Note that resource wait timeout has no affect in this case!

I know this occurs for v6.x; not sure about v7.

IBM has evaluated the request, and has determined that it can not be implemented at this time or does not align with the current multi-year strategy. This request may be resubmitted for consideration after 18 months from the date of submission. The request submitter will automatically be notified by email when the request qualifies for reconsideration and resubmission.

More information is needed for this requirement.

We are not sure what "lock" is referenced.. But if things deadlock and processing stops - this should be a PMR and investigated to understand if/what we can do to resolve it... Is there a PMR reference for this? We did not see one listed in the devWorks RFE database. Has there been prior diagnostic steps taken leading up to this?

Due to processing by IBM, this request was reassigned to have the following updated attributes:
Brand - Servers and Systems Software
    Product family - Storage
Product - Tivoli Storage Manager (TSM) Family

For recording keeping, the previous attributes were:
    Brand - Tivoli
    Product family - Storage
Product - Tivoli Storage Manager (TSM) Family
