IBM System Storage Ideas Portal

This portal is to open public enhancement requests against IBM System Storage products. To view all of your ideas submitted to IBM, create and manage groups of Ideas, or create an idea explicitly set to be either visible by all (public) or visible only to you and IBM (private), use the IBM Unified Ideas Portal (https://ideas.ibm.com).

Shape the future of IBM!

We invite you to shape the future of IBM, including product roadmaps, by submitting ideas that matter to you the most. Here's how it works:

Search existing ideas

Start by searching and reviewing ideas and requests to enhance a product or service. Take a look at ideas others have posted, and add a comment, vote, or subscribe to updates on them if they matter to you. If you can't find what you are looking for,

Post your ideas
  1. Post an idea.

  2. Get feedback from the IBM team and other customers to refine your idea.

  3. Follow the idea through the IBM Ideas process.

Stagger Remote Copy Consistency Group cycles

Would like Spectrum Virtualize to automatically stagger the cycles of Remote Copy Consistency Groups (RCCG's).
When using GMCV's, all volumes in the RCCG start a FlashCopy mapping at the exact same point-in-time when a new cycle is started for the RCCG. This results in a short host-side IO pause, long enough for writes to flush from Upper to Lower Cache. This is expected and has only minimal performance impact. However, if multiple RCCG's all start a new cycle AT THE SAME TIME, you now have a multitude of FlashCopy Mappings all starting simultaneously. And the performance impact can go from minimal to significant (especially on lower-end systems with limited cache memory).
Initially, the RCCG's can manually be started at staggered times to avoid this. But over time, cycle start times do not stay at the same interval due to sporadic high write change rates which push a given RCCG copy over the cycle period. And in situations where you have a couple dozen RCCG's using a 450-second cycle period, some of them inevitably hit the same cycle start time eventually.
I would like to see Global Mirror code modified so that only one RCCG cycle can be started at a given time, and any other RCCG cycle cannot be started for ~5 seconds. This would give time for the first RCCG to start all of its FlashCopy mappings, and flush the writes out of cache, before the next RCCG starts a cycle.

8.4.0 release (4Q 2020) includes a fix that staggers the cycle times of GMCV slightly to prevent all relationships or consistency groups with the same cycle time cycling at the same time causing a convoying effect.

Thank you for your support of Spectrum Virtualize. Please let me know if you have any questions or comments.
