Need ability to rebalance volume extents when adding more MDisks to an existing storage pool

When adding MDisks to an existing storage pool for SWV7K or SVC we do not automatically rebalance the extents volumes' are using from the pool thus we get hotspots and imbalance in utilization. We have had request to add this to SVC since 2003 and still not there and still on futures list in roadmap. We have an unsupported Perl script that sort of works but hasn't been updated to work for SWV7K or Easy Tier enabled storage pools. Dev has it ready but can't seem to get the legal stuff done to post it. We need this at a minimum yesterday. We need it in the product ASAP as what kind of virtualization product is SVC or SWV7K if it can't do this simple thing when customers need to add capacity to a pool. XIV does it as does DS8K and now LSI stuff and other vendors too.

    Experience say that IBM give us, more or less, 2 releases every year, but then last IBM developer comments could mean that we have to wait 2015 to have this function.
    I hope that you could reconsider this...

    I added my vote. This is a long required feature. I am surprised that is not already in the code. Is not such a big deal in code, but is something very important on the v7000 and SVC.

    This has been a long requested feature since back in the v1 code levels. There is a perl script available to perform this function, but I don't know that it's being maintained.

    IBM DS8000 now has homogenous EasyTier to re-balance back-end workload dynamically. Perhaps that same feature could be implemented here.

    Agree. I was a bit surprised that the SVC/V7000 doesn't automatically re-balance the pool when adding mdisks. Our HDS AMS2500 (midrange) system re-balances pools when adding additional RGs to a DP pool.

    I say the same, need that feature quick.
    as i see it it's more important than compression and dedupe.
    have the basics sorted first.
    add more spindles to a pool and no performance boost at all..

    Agreed with the RFE - I was going to submit the same request when I saw this. This would be a major product enhancement and would position V7K's to compete better with fully virtualized (back end disk wise) arrays such as 3PAR.
