SuSE Kernel Updates caused GPFS incompatibility.

GM was forced to perform 2 GPFS upgrades across 3 large clusters due to SuSE security patches conflicting with GPFS. SuSE and IBM are requested to work together to keep this from happening going forward.

IBM update processes have been improved. Further enhancements will require decoupling from the kernel, which is a long term deliverable.

Scale has significant kernel dependencies, which are key to its ability to perform as it does. We are investigating the feasibility of reducing those dependencies to only the kernel ABI. While the ABI does still change from time, requiring changes in Scale, it is (in theory) better documented and will enable both ourselves and customers to plan with some confidence for when changes are required to Scale. Please understand that this is complex work and we are only just beginning the feasibility investigation, so results should not be expected in the very short term.
