Ability to exclude specific volumes from PBHA synchronization for hosts within the same cluster

In a VMware host pool, we have a Microsoft SQL Server Always On configuration that replicates data directly between our two sites.

These hosts are also part of a cluster managed by PBHA, which independently replicates the data between the two IBM FlashSystem 5300 systems. As a result, the same data is replicated twice: once by SQL Server Always On and again by PBHA.

We would like to have the ability to exclude specific volumes from PBHA replication, so that these volumes are not synchronized between the two FlashSystem systems.

The goal is to avoid unnecessary data duplication. With the current configuration, certain transactions can result in the equivalent of four copies of the data being maintained.

This leads to:

  • Additional storage capacity consumption
  • Additional I/O and processing overhead
  • Increased processing time for disk writes
  • Unnecessary replication traffic

A per-volume exclusion mechanism for PBHA would allow customers to avoid redundant replication when application-level replication, such as SQL Server Always On, is already providing data protection between sites.
