IBM System Storage Ideas Portal

This portal is to open public enhancement requests against IBM System Storage products. To view all of your ideas submitted to IBM, create and manage groups of Ideas, or create an idea explicitly set to be either visible by all (public) or visible only to you and IBM (private), use the IBM Unified Ideas Portal (https://ideas.ibm.com).

Shape the future of IBM!

We invite you to shape the future of IBM, including product roadmaps, by submitting ideas that matter to you the most. Here's how it works:

Search existing ideas

Start by searching and reviewing ideas and requests to enhance a product or service. Take a look at ideas others have posted, and add a comment, vote, or subscribe to updates on them if they matter to you. If you can't find what you are looking for,

Post your ideas
  1. Post an idea.

  2. Get feedback from the IBM team and other customers to refine your idea.

  3. Follow the idea through the IBM Ideas process.

Expose the stored MD5 checksum through the S3 API

IBM Storage Deep Archive computes an MD5 checksum for each object when it is written to tape and stores it internally. When the object is later restored, the checksum is recomputed and compared with the stored value to verify integrity. However, this stored MD5 cannot currently be retrieved through the S3 API.

Today there are only two ways to obtain it, and neither is suitable for automated workflows:

  • A storage administrator connects to a node over SSH and runs an internal command.
  • The application issues a RestoreObject followed by a GetObject, then recomputes the MD5 on the client side.

The second option requires recalling the entire object from tape and transferring it over the network solely to verify a checksum. On a tape archive this is expensive in terms of time, drive usage, and bandwidth.

Request: expose the stored MD5 through the S3 API (for example, as object metadata returned by HeadObject or GetObjectAttributes), so that applications can retrieve it without recalling the object from tape.
