IBM System Storage Ideas Portal

This portal is to open public enhancement requests against IBM System Storage products. To view all of your ideas submitted to IBM, create and manage groups of Ideas, or create an idea explicitly set to be either visible by all (public) or visible only to you and IBM (private), use the IBM Unified Ideas Portal (https://ideas.ibm.com).

Shape the future of IBM!

Allow change Fusion HCI hostnames and rack units (rack-less option)

Currently, Fusion HCI uses hostnames that appear to be fixed and cannot be modified. It would be beneficial to allow customers to change these hostnames to align with their own naming conventions.
Additionally, the default hostnames include the rack unit (e.g., ruX) as part of the name. In rack-less configurations where customers provide their own racks, this creates a constraint by implying that components must be installed in the same rack unit, which is often not feasible.
Therefore, the request is to enable hostname customization so that customers can assign meaningful names and specify the actual rack unit where components will be located in rack-less deployments.

The requirement to enable clients to assign their own host names is accepted. Delivery is expected in 1H2027. As noted above, it's already possible to install Fusion HCI components into alternative RU positions with the caveat that some status and error messages may report the wrong RU position of a component. There are no plans to change this.

This can already be done today with one caveat; some Fusion UI elements issue messages that reference the expected RU position of the component. Switches are expected in certain RU positions, control nodes in certain RU positions, etc.  If you choose to re-rack components into different RU positions, the RU position of these messages will not be correct.  That could slightly delay / hinder IBM SSRs performing on-site maintenance. There are no plans to change existing behavior.
