Safe Bucket Policy Handling with generateBucketName

Environment:

  • IBM Storage Fusion Data Foundation / ODF 4.19.1
  • Rook-Ceph Operator
  • Buckets provisioned via ObjectBucketClaims (OBCs)
  • GitOps automation using Helm + Argo CD
  • generateBucketName used for dynamic bucket namin

Problem Summary:

  1. Destructive Reconciliation Behavior
  • Older versions allowed external S3 policy/lifecycle management.
  • Newer versions enforce reconciliation: any policy/lifecycle not declared in the OBC spec is deleted.
  • This breaks backward compatibility and silently removes critical configurations.
  1. No Support for generateBucketName in Policy JSON
  • Bucket policies require the actual bucket name in the Resource field.
  • With generateBucketName, the name is unknown at creation time.
  • This prevents defining valid policies in the OBC spec during provisioning

Requested Enhancements:

Preserve Existing Bucket Configurations

  • Introduce a flag in the OBC spec (e.g., preserveExistingConfig: true) to prevent deletion of externally managed policies/lifecycles.
  • This would allow safe upgrades and coexistence with legacy configurations.

Enable Dynamic Policy Templates

  • Support placeholders like ${BUCKET_NAME} in bucketPolicy JSON.
  • Operator should substitute the actual bucket name after binding.
  • This enables GitOps compatibility and declarative provisioning with generateBucketName.
