IBM System Storage Ideas Portal

This portal is to open public enhancement requests against IBM System Storage products. To view all of your ideas submitted to IBM, create and manage groups of Ideas, or create an idea explicitly set to be either visible by all (public) or visible only to you and IBM (private), use the IBM Unified Ideas Portal (https://ideas.ibm.com).

Shape the future of IBM!

We invite you to shape the future of IBM, including product roadmaps, by submitting ideas that matter to you the most. Here's how it works:

Search existing ideas

Start by searching and reviewing ideas and requests to enhance a product or service. Take a look at ideas others have posted, and add a comment, vote, or subscribe to updates on them if they matter to you. If you can't find what you are looking for,

Post your ideas
  1. Post an idea.

  2. Get feedback from the IBM team and other customers to refine your idea.

  3. Follow the idea through the IBM Ideas process.

Fusion HCI with SAN HBAs for Fusion Access

Fusion Access enables customers to use their existing SAN Block-Storage on OpenShift with our gpfs filesystem, which has significant advantages over block based CSI drivers!
Unfortunately, this is only supported on Fusion SDS, as Fusion HCI does not support SAN HBA.

The Idea:
IBM should support an RPQ based proccess, that allows customers to add FC-HBAs to their Dell based Fusion HCIs.
The customer can add provide their own Qlogic or Emulex HBAs, that will be installed by an IBM SSR.
The HBA drivers should be already included in RH coreOS.
IBM Fusion supports the IO stack top down to the FC-HBA.
The customer needs to support masking, zoning, multipathing and all SAN based configurations and issues, as those outside of Fusion HCI.
The idea is to use this setup with Fusion Access. The use of block CSI drivers should be avoided and limited to as few LUNs as possible.

This is a critical requirement we must meet if we want to advance the strategy of moving VMware workloads to OpenShift Virtualization. Most customers have significantly higher storage capacity needs than our current storage nodes can provide. Adding nodes solely to satisfy capacity demands — without an actual need for additional compute — would unnecessarily increase Fusion costs (both Fusion software and OCP licenses), ultimately undermining the TCO value proposition.
