Remove SQL Server 2016 PowerShell Extensions, SMO and CLR Types dependency from DP for SQL

IBM Data Protection for Microsoft SQL Server (DP for SQL) currently requires Microsoft SQL Server 2016 prerequisite components, including:

  • Microsoft SQL Server 2016 System CLR Types
  • Microsoft SQL Server 2016 Management Objects (SMO)
  • Windows PowerShell Extensions for SQL Server 2016

These components are required for DP for SQL to function correctly and are installed/provided as part of the DP for SQL prerequisite requirements.

The customer is upgrading their protected SQL Server environment from SQL Server 2016 to SQL Server 2019 and has a requirement to remove the legacy SQL Server 2016 components, particularly the Windows PowerShell Extensions for SQL Server 2016.

Currently, removing these components is not supported because they are required dependencies for DP for SQL. Replacing them manually with the corresponding SQL Server 2019 components is also not documented or supported.

The customer requests that DP for SQL be enhanced to support the appropriate newer Microsoft SQL Server prerequisite components, allowing the SQL Server 2016 versions of these components to be removed while maintaining full DP for SQL backup and restore functionality.

In particular, support for the newer version of the Windows PowerShell Extensions for SQL Server, along with the corresponding CLR Types and SMO components, is requested.
