IBM System Storage Ideas Portal

This portal is to open public enhancement requests against IBM System Storage products. To view all of your ideas submitted to IBM, create and manage groups of Ideas, or create an idea explicitly set to be either visible by all (public) or visible only to you and IBM (private), use the IBM Unified Ideas Portal (https://ideas.ibm.com).

Shape the future of IBM!

We invite you to shape the future of IBM, including product roadmaps, by submitting ideas that matter to you the most. Here's how it works:

Search existing ideas

Start by searching and reviewing ideas and requests to enhance a product or service. Take a look at ideas others have posted, and add a comment, vote, or subscribe to updates on them if they matter to you. If you can't find what you are looking for,

Post your ideas
  1. Post an idea.

  2. Get feedback from the IBM team and other customers to refine your idea.

Non-blocking Storage Protect server audit library

Today, when a Storage Protect server requires  to run AUDIT LIBRARY on a SCSI library, all Storage Protect server activities on that SCSI library needs to be stopped. Means, processes and sessions already using the SCSI library its tape drives need to be stopped and their mounted tape volumes must be dismounted. In addition, new mounts need to be prevented, which for example can be achieved by setting the library device class mountlimit to zero. The caveat of setting mountlimit to zero will be that new incoming mount requests will fail and not wait.

For large inventory SCSI libraries and virtual libraries shared by multiple Storage Protect servers it is nearly impossible to find a not disruptive time window to run Storage Protect AUDIT LIBRARY.

We request, that a Storage Protect server will allow to run AUDIT LIBRARY on a SCSI library while the SCSI library is in use.
For example, AUDIT LIBRARY should include

  • lock library activities
  • prevent new mounts without letting them fail; new incoming mounts should be queued until AUDIT LIBRARY is finished
  • wait for existing mounts to dismount; an AUDIT LIBRARY option may allow the administrator to decide to wait or to cancel processes/ sessions and force dismounts
  • run AUDIT LIBRARY
  • unlock library activities

Another option would be to have the Storage Protect server running a required AUDIT LIBRARY automatically at a time of no library activity, at time no cartridge will be mounted in the drives.
