Add a supported stale-mount state reconciliation/reset mechanism to IBM Storage Archive SDE for Windows

IBM Storage Archive Single Drive Edition for Windows should provide a supported mechanism to reconcile or reset its persisted drive/mount state after a tape drive temporarily disappears and is later re-enumerated.

A reproducible failure mode exists in which:

  • Windows has successfully rediscovered the same LTO drive and reports it as healthy.

  • SDE still reports the previous drive letter and LTFS_MEDIA.

  • The actual LTFS volume is not usable.

  • Configuration still considers the medium mounted/in use, so the drive-letter control is disabled.

  • LtfsCmdUnassign refuses to run because SDE considers the medium state invalid for Unassign.

In testing with SDE 2.4.9.0 on Windows 11 and an IBM ULTRIUM-HH6 LTO-6 drive over SAS, clearing the persisted SDE device state while the services are stopped causes SDE to rediscover the drive cleanly as unassigned/RESET. A subsequent supported LtfsCmdAssign restores normal operation.

The product should implement this reconciliation itself rather than requiring registry manipulation.

Requested enhancement:

  • Automatically reconcile persisted DeviceTable state when Windows reports device removal/re-arrival.

  • Provide a supported LtfsCmdReset / LtfsCmdReconcile command.

  • Add an option in LTFS Configuration to reset a stale logical mount.

  • Allow LtfsCmdUnassign to recover when a drive is logically marked mounted but no valid live mount session remains.

  • Add troubleshooting documentation for power-loss/device-reenumeration cases.

Benefit:
This would eliminate a state where users are locked out of both automatic remount and the supported Unassign/Assign recovery path after temporary drive loss. It would also avoid forcing users to reboot Windows or manipulate undocumented registry state.

Tested environment:

  • IBM Storage Archive SDE for Windows 2.4.9.0_10523

  • Windows 11 25H2 x64

  • IBM ULTRIUM-HH6 LTO-6, firmware KAJ9

  • External SAS, SCSI address 0.0.4.0

  • Reproduced across multiple consecutive power-loss/reconnect cycles
