IBM System Storage Ideas Portal

This portal is to open public enhancement requests against IBM System Storage products. To view all of your ideas submitted to IBM, create and manage groups of Ideas, or create an idea explicitly set to be either visible by all (public) or visible only to you and IBM (private), use the IBM Unified Ideas Portal (https://ideas.ibm.com).

Shape the future of IBM!

We invite you to shape the future of IBM, including product roadmaps, by submitting ideas that matter to you the most. Here's how it works:

Search existing ideas

Start by searching and reviewing ideas and requests to enhance a product or service. Take a look at ideas others have posted, and add a comment, vote, or subscribe to updates on them if they matter to you. If you can't find what you are looking for,

Post your ideas
  1. Post an idea.

  2. Get feedback from the IBM team and other customers to refine your idea.

  3. Follow the idea through the IBM Ideas process.

vdisk_protection with Spectrum Protect Snapshot

The vdisk_protection_time and vdisk_protection_enabled, are two parameters provided in Spectrum Virtualize and Storwize to prevent accidental deletion and unmapping of a vdisk.

Unfortunately, this vdisk_protection function is unusable if any automation with additional products e.g. Spectrum Protect Snapshot dynamically creating, deleting vdisks and dynamically map and unmap vdisks from a host.

It should be possible to disable the vdisk_protection for specific storage pools so FlashCopy target volumes can be dynamically created, deleted, mapped and unmapped as long as they are created in such storage pools that are excluded from vdisk_protection.

Enabling orchestrated hardware snapshots, integrated with strategic IBM toolsets is essential. Particularly with the Accelerate line, the "redirect on write" snapshot technology, at the storage level, dramatically reduces the amount of capacity necessary to shift to a "flash-2-flash-2-cloud" protection ecosystem (cyber protection, air-gapping, and rapid restore). Any time we are moving (streaming) data around, we are adding latency to an ecosystem that really doesn't need it.

@IBM Development: this is the same RfE created by me (ID: 120114) in the TCC group. It was previously declined by development but should be considered to reopen.
