IBM System Storage Ideas Portal

This portal is to open public enhancement requests against IBM System Storage products. To view all of your ideas submitted to IBM, create and manage groups of Ideas, or create an idea explicitly set to be either visible by all (public) or visible only to you and IBM (private), use the IBM Unified Ideas Portal (https://ideas.ibm.com).

Shape the future of IBM!

We invite you to shape the future of IBM, including product roadmaps, by submitting ideas that matter to you the most. Here's how it works:

Search existing ideas

Start by searching and reviewing ideas and requests to enhance a product or service. Take a look at ideas others have posted, and add a comment, vote, or subscribe to updates on them if they matter to you. If you can't find what you are looking for,

Post your ideas
  1. Post an idea.

  2. Get feedback from the IBM team and other customers to refine your idea.

  3. Follow the idea through the IBM Ideas process.

Create Automated Queue for Vdisk Migrations

SVC supports 32 VDisk migrations at one time. When migrating off of an old array, there may be hundreds of VDisks that need moved. It becomes very cumbersome to continuously monitor the process and then kick off more migrations. I'd like to see a queue built into SVC so I can issue as many migrations as I want and then SVC just puts anything above 32 into an automated queue where it will start the 33rd migration when the first one finishes and so on and so forth.

Due to processing by IBM, this request was reassigned to have the following updated attributes:
Brand - Servers and Systems Software
    Product family - Storage
Product - IBM System Storage SAN Volume Controller (SVC) / Spectrum Virtualize

For recording keeping, the previous attributes were:
    Brand - Tivoli
    Product family - Storage
Product - IBM System Storage SAN Volume Controller (SVC) / Spectrum Virtualize

As it stands, this function is already delivered with Virtual Storage Center (within the Tivoli Storage Productivity Center) V5.2, generally available late October 2013. A description of this migration capability is given on the VSC FAQ here: https://www.ibm.com/developerworks/community/wikis/home?lang=en#!/wiki/IBM%20SmartCloud%20Virtual%20Storage%20Center/page/FAQ%20corner Here is some of what it describes there:
    Migration:
Q: When migrating volumes from the SVC interface directly, it will only migrate a limited number of volumes at a time, with no ability to queue up the total number of volumes to migrate.  Is there a way to queue up migrating more volumes?
A: As of VSC (TPC) V5.2, yes!  Go to the TPC V5.2 Info Center and search on "migrating volumes" to find it in the documentation.  It will return a section that starts as follows...Transforming and migrating volumesYou can transform fully allocated volumes to compressed or thin-provisioned volumes, or transform compressed or thin-provisioned volumes to fully allocated volumes. You can move volumes to other pools or to pools that are enabled for Easy Tier®.
Before you open the Transform Storage wizard, you must probe the storage virtualizers to collect information about the logical devices, such as volumes and virtual disks that are associated with the storage virtualizer.
    ....
Here's a screen shot of the Volume Transformation screen in the GUI:As part of the transform capability, while we don't actually make SVC do more migrations at a time, you can request for example to migrate 100 volumes and VSC/TPC will automate it for you so that you don't have to manually manage the process. You would select the "Pool Migration" option in the picture above.  TPC handles cleaning up of the mirrors as well.
While the request may have been assuming a change in SVC code or current limitations to get the same result, in the near-term we consider this closed as delivered as function available the Virtual Storage Center (VSC) offering.

We agree with the value of having a way to queue up multiple VDisk migrations when migrating a large number of volumes.  While not necessarily having a plan for it into our upcoming release, we will have it under consideration for a follow-on release. We recommend using scripting with the SVC CLI to accomplish your near-term needs.  We will also investigate the possibility of delivering such a function sooner through the use of our Storage Resource Management tool, Tivoli Storage Productivity Center.
