IBM System Storage Ideas Portal

This portal is to open public enhancement requests against IBM System Storage products. To view all of your ideas submitted to IBM, create and manage groups of Ideas, or create an idea explicitly set to be either visible by all (public) or visible only to you and IBM (private), use the IBM Unified Ideas Portal (https://ideas.ibm.com).

Shape the future of IBM!

We invite you to shape the future of IBM, including product roadmaps, by submitting ideas that matter to you the most. Here's how it works:

Search existing ideas

Start by searching and reviewing ideas and requests to enhance a product or service. Take a look at ideas others have posted, and add a comment, vote, or subscribe to updates on them if they matter to you. If you can't find what you are looking for,

Post your ideas
  1. Post an idea.

  2. Get feedback from the IBM team and other customers to refine your idea.

  3. Follow the idea through the IBM Ideas process.

Enable LLDP on IBM FlashSystem Ethernet ports to advertise port details to connected network switches

Please add support for Link Layer Discovery Protocol (LLDP) on IBM FlashSystem Ethernet interfaces so connected network switches can automatically discover and identify storage ports.

Requested functionality

  • Advertise system name, system description, chassis ID, port ID, and port description using standard IEEE 802.1AB LLDP.

Include useful identifiers such as the FlashSystem system name, node/canister, and physical Ethernet port location.

Allow administrators to enable or disable LLDP globally and per supported Ethernet port through the GUI and CLI.

Where receive support is available, display connected switch and switch-port details on the storage system.

Benefits
This would help storage and network teams validate cabling, identify switch-to-storage port mappings, troubleshoot connectivity issues, and maintain accurate topology documentation. It would also reduce manual tracing and the risk of changing or disconnecting the wrong port during maintenance.

Example use case
When a FlashSystem Ethernet port is connected to a network switch, the switch’s LLDP neighbor output should identify the storage system, node/canister, and physical port. This would allow teams to confirm connectivity without manually correlating MAC addresses and cabling records.
