IBM System Storage Ideas Portal

This portal is to open public enhancement requests against IBM System Storage products. To view all of your ideas submitted to IBM, create and manage groups of Ideas, or create an idea explicitly set to be either visible by all (public) or visible only to you and IBM (private), use the IBM Unified Ideas Portal (https://ideas.ibm.com).

Shape the future of IBM!

We invite you to shape the future of IBM, including product roadmaps, by submitting ideas that matter to you the most. Here's how it works:

Search existing ideas

Start by searching and reviewing ideas and requests to enhance a product or service. Take a look at ideas others have posted, and add a comment, vote, or subscribe to updates on them if they matter to you. If you can't find what you are looking for,

Post your ideas
  1. Post an idea.

  2. Get feedback from the IBM team and other customers to refine your idea.

  3. Follow the idea through the IBM Ideas process.

Reduce DRAID Rebuild Time for Samsung SSDs to Within 60 Minutes on FlashSystem

The customer has observed significant differences in DRAID rebuild performance across different FlashSystem configurations:

  • FS7300: 22 x 7.68TB Samsung SSD, Stripe Width 12, Rebuild Time: 160 minues (80% utilization of 120TB)

FS7300: 18 × 9.6 TB FCM4, Stripe Width 12, Rebuild Time: 249 minutes (80% utilization of 120TB)

FS7600: 32 x 6.6TB FCM5, Rebuild Time: 16 minutes, Copyback time: 3 hours (80% utilization of 120TB)

Following the optimization of the DRAID rebuild algorithm for FCM5 Small during FS7600 PoC by TSMC, FS7600 can complete a rebuild in approximately 16 minutes.

The customer has purchased a significant number of FS7600 systems and expects comparable improvements in rebuild performance for Samsung SSD-based configurations.

Feature Request

Request IBM Storage Development to optimize the DRAID rebuild algorithm for Samsung SSDs, leveraging the improvements introduced for FCM5 Small where technically applicable.

Target Requirement

  • Reduce DRAID rebuild time for Samsung SSD-based configurations to within 60 minutes.

Evaluate whether the FCM5 Small rebuild algorithm optimizations can be applied or adapted to Samsung SSD configurations.

Minimize the time spent in a degraded state to improve data protection and system availability.

Business Justification

The customer has made a substantial investment in FS7600 systems and has observed significant rebuild performance improvements following the FCM5 Small algorithm optimization. The current rebuild times for Samsung SSD-based configurations remain substantially longer, creating a gap in expected resiliency performance.

Improving Samsung SSD rebuild performance to within 60 minutes would help align the customer experience with the improvements demonstrated on FCM5 Small and better meet the customer's operational and resiliency requirements.
