IBM System Storage Ideas Portal

This portal is to open public enhancement requests against IBM System Storage products. To view all of your ideas submitted to IBM, create and manage groups of Ideas, or create an idea explicitly set to be either visible by all (public) or visible only to you and IBM (private), use the IBM Unified Ideas Portal (https://ideas.ibm.com).

Shape the future of IBM!

We invite you to shape the future of IBM, including product roadmaps, by submitting ideas that matter to you the most. Here's how it works:

Search existing ideas

Start by searching and reviewing ideas and requests to enhance a product or service. Take a look at ideas others have posted, and add a comment, vote, or subscribe to updates on them if they matter to you. If you can't find what you are looking for,

Post your ideas
  1. Post an idea.

  2. Get feedback from the IBM team and other customers to refine your idea.

  3. Follow the idea through the IBM Ideas process.

Increase limits for hosts and host ports per SVC IO-group / per system

Can IBM increase for SVC clusters following v8.6.x limitations ?

1. Fibre Channel hosts per system

2. Fibre Channel hosts per I/O group

3. Fibre Channel host ports per I/O group

4. Number of Host mappable Volumes

5. Number of supported logins per node Fiber Channel WWPN

The newest generations of SVC nodes (SV3, and former generation SV2) can handle much more hosts per IO-group compared to previous SVC node generations. Additionally the SVC clusters need to handle much more capacity per IO group than in the past. Because of this the host limitations need to be adopted to the new managed capacity ranges and the increased SVC node performance. In case the customer uses AIX LPARs then one AIX LPAR consumes eight WWPNs per host (2x VIOSes, 2x Fabrics => 4 WWPNs active / 4x passive Shadow-WWPNs => sum = 8). The SVC cluster's managed capacity and node performance accepts in the meanwhile much more AIX hosts per IO-group. But the current limit of hosts per IO-group enables in such mapping configuration only 256 hosts per IO-group (with SV2 nodes).

HANA-on-Power customers consider actually to spread HANA functions over multiple LPARs rather than currently handling them insides a single LPAR. This increases even more the need to support more hosts per IO group.

We request a significant increase of those existing limitation to keep our existing SVC install base.

We would appreciate an increase of those limitation numbers in the current LTE (8.6.0.x) code stream, as production systems are affected.

(Please keep one request per IBM Idea so we can evaluate each one individually)

But thank you for your Idea. We have reviewed this request and believe it is a good candidate for Virtualize.

    • FC hosts per I/O group was increased in 8.5.0

    • FC host ports per I/O group is planned to increase

    • Host mappable volumes is planned to increase

We appreciate your input and hope that you will continue to submit enhancement requests, as this feedback is a key component to shaping the future direction of the Virtualize and FlashSystem family.

    Thanks,
    FlashSystem Team
