IBM System Storage Ideas Portal

This portal is to open public enhancement requests against IBM System Storage products. To view all of your ideas submitted to IBM, create and manage groups of Ideas, or create an idea explicitly set to be either visible by all (public) or visible only to you and IBM (private), use the IBM Unified Ideas Portal (https://ideas.ibm.com).

Shape the future of IBM!

We invite you to shape the future of IBM, including product roadmaps, by submitting ideas that matter to you the most. Here's how it works:

Search existing ideas

Start by searching and reviewing ideas and requests to enhance a product or service. Take a look at ideas others have posted, and add a comment, vote, or subscribe to updates on them if they matter to you. If you can't find what you are looking for,

Post your ideas
  1. Post an idea.

  2. Get feedback from the IBM team and other customers to refine your idea.

  3. Follow the idea through the IBM Ideas process.

Automatic Recovery Enhancement for CSM Sessions After Temporary Switch Failures

In our environment, temporary switch port/SAN issues frequently cause CSM replication sessions to move into a Severe state and suspend MM/GM pairs.Even after the switch issue is resolved, CSM does not automatically clear the error or recover the session. Manual intervention is always required to restart/resume the session. We understand the current design is intended to protect data consistency. However, we would like IBM to consider an enhancement in future CSM development to improve automatic recovery handling for temporary infrastructure-related events.

We request IBM to consider a future enhancement where CSM can:
Detect when the original switch/SAN issue has been resolved
Revalidate path and pair health automatically
Clear stale Severe session conditions
Automatically resume/recover eligible sessions where consistency is not at risk
Reduce the need for repeated manual H1→H2 or Resume GM operations

Business Impact
This issue occurs frequently in our environment and requires repeated operational intervention from storage administrators even after the issue is resolved. Automating this process would reduce manual effort, improve recovery time, and improve overall CSM usability and resiliency.

I'll consider it...but this is difficult with regards to "hard to do harm" strategies that we're supposed to hold on IBM products. Automatically restarting MM pairs could lead you into a situation where you have no consistent set of data. I think at the very least I'd need to be able to create a FlashCopy off the MM secondary, prior to automatically restarting the MM pairs, which can be removed once all the pairs are back in a Duplex state. Would this be an acceptable strategy? Would you have enough volumes at the MM site to have a Space Efficient target volume for every MM target which would allow us to do a temporary flash during resync processing?
