Erase on Scratch

We have been directed to implement the ERASE on Scratch (ALL) setting on our IBM Systems. Testing was done in our Development environment, but users notified us that the elapsed times of jobs that deleted large disk files were significantly longer with EOS enabled versus EOS disabled. A decision was made to turn off Erase on Scratch.

Although DADSM UNMAP was delivered in 3.1 timeframe, users still need DADSM UNMAP support on volumes in copy services relationships. This requires DS8K Hardware support. I am changing the status back to Uncommitted in order to keep the IDEA open.

A correction to the last comment. DADSM UNMAP was delivered in the z/os 3.1 timeframe, but DADSM UNMAP does not support datasets on volumes in copy services relationships. So, this idea's status needs to be changed back to uncommitted.

This idea has been delivered in z/OS 3.1, which was made generally available 9/29/2023.

DADSM UNMAP function was delivered in April of this year (2022). This support, today, is only for volumes that have the correct microcode level, are not in a copy services relationship and have the correct racf facility profile set. With this support, there is no elapsed time penalty to erase tracks from extents that are scratched or partially released. APAR numbers are OA61492, OA61494 and OA61495. Support for datasets on volumes in copy services relationships is pending hardware support.

zVM development released a 'Fast Minidisk Erase' facility where they are using Locate Record Erase to 'erase' up to 255 tracks at one time.
EOS support on zOS has varied from using WCKD commands against every track (with chained WCKD commands) to write record 0 and clear the track.
If they now utilize Locate Record Erase as is being done by zVM, it will reduce the IO count as well as the time required for the erase.
