logical volume retrieve in cache - tool

as IBM lab service unit, we would assist the customer to takeover some tasks the client has to execute by his own side when HW refresh is performed on new ts7700, or when a backup infrastructure change is in place.

We need to be able to recall by HW tool (embedded into the ts7700 code ) the logical volumes migrated on the physical medias back into the cache.

Being able to recall logical volumes back into the cache by HW side, it could be a benefit for the customer, because no human resources are required and it would be helpful for IBM lab service to offer/sign new deal.

The use cases this new tool cloud find application:

AAA> by today we are at the age the hydra ts7780 – by code 6.0/6.1 will be able to reach a huge cache capacity – up to 8PB, therefore clients could choose to discontinue the back end tape library.

To doable – all data need to be recalled from cartridges into the cache.

Client does this task today – by an existing tool (Prestage tool) over SW Z/os – dedicating human resources and effort time.

Running this recall process by HW tool side – we could better satisfy the customer expectation – being able to recall all logical volume into the cache from HW without a client engagement.

BBB> when we perform the FMES ( frame replacement service ) we handover the new system to the customer with all logical volumes migrated on physical medias. This is the designed process.

Being today the machines configured often with big cache ( >1PB), customers are concerning the performance at the start point in time being all the logical volume access – provided by physical recalls.

Again, in case of grid configuration with more clusters – all FMES must be planned far away each-others to allow new data filling up the cache.

Running a recall process by HW tool side – we could better satisfy the customer expectation – being able to perform the cache refill from HW prospective, forced in short time.

CCC> Ts7700 world is dynamic - customer often need to move dedicated set of volumes in cache partition 0 recalling all data from physical medias.

This task would be in charge the client performed via Prestage tool over SW application. Human resources need to be engaged.

By running this recall process via HW tool side – we could better satisfy the customer expectation – being able to perform the process by ts7700 code, forcing the cache refill in short time.

.

Such HW tool could be applied for different scenarios being able to open new business opportunities for IBM Lab services and on the other hands reduce the human resources engagged from customer team for execution and monitoring – what ts7700 code could easily perform improving IBM business.

Reopened and investigation underway, this would be after release of TS7785 if the investigation is positive.
