Buffered log design Enhancement to take advantage of the 65 GB virtual volumes

The majority of TS7700 customers are using in the Data Class setting for Virtual Volume Sizes the default 3490 Counters Handling of “Surface EOT”.
There are various reasons why a customer does not want to switch to “Wrap Supported” e.g., they back-charge end customers based on the channel bytes read/write counters in TCDB/DFSMSrmm or there are DB2 utilities in use which are allocating space based on the tape dataset channel byte size.

Based on that a 25 GB virtual volume is not fully utilized once the compression ratio is above 2.72 and a 65 GB virtual volume is not fully utilized once the compression ratio is above 1.05.

As a result, only customers with mostly non-compressible data will take any advantage of the 65 GB virtual volume size, all others will not see any large benefit of using 65 GB virtual volumes. An enhancement of the buffered log design is needed so that the channel bytes write counters are not limited to 65 GB but still displaying the correct value (no counter wrap).

Read buffered log for 3490 devices has 3-byte counters so the two settings are there based on whether applications can handle the wrap or not … so oam and hsm we both handle the wrap … and the tape management systems should as well. At this time, the request can not be done with the current 3490 read buffered log architecture to support larger fields outside of doing the wrap as this would cause incompatibilities throughout the environment and unfortunately there are no spare bytes in read buffered log to add new parallel fields.

    Corrections to the last sentence:

An enhancement of the buffered log design is needed so that the uncompressed channel bytes write counters are not limited to 68 GB but still displaying the correct value (no counter wrap).
