Provide Official lin_tape Driver Support for Ubuntu 24.04 LTS and 26.04 LTS

Current Behavior: Currently, the IBM Storage Protect (ISP) Server operates successfully and without issue on Ubuntu 24.04 LTS, and testing shows identical stability on the upcoming/current Ubuntu 26.04 LTS releases. However, official ISP support on these modern Ubuntu platforms is blocked entirely by a peripheral dependency: the IBM lin_tape device driver is not officially supported for the newer Linux kernels shipped with these Ubuntu LTS versions.

Desired Behavior: We are requesting that IBM develop, test, and release an updated lin_tape driver that officially supports both Ubuntu 24.04 LTS (Noble Numbat) and Ubuntu 26.04 LTS. Consequently, we request that IBM Storage Protect Server be officially certified and supported on these operating systems for environments utilizing physical or virtual tape libraries.

Business Justification / Value: Ubuntu Long Term Support (LTS) releases are heavily utilized in our enterprise environment due to their predictability, robust security patching, and extended lifecycle.

Because lin_tape is currently unsupported on these versions, we are artificially prevented from upgrading our ISP servers to modern, secure operating systems. We are forced to either linger on older, deprecating OS versions to maintain official IBM support for our tape infrastructure, or migrate to different, potentially costlier enterprise Linux distributions. Since the ISP software itself already proves stable on these newer Ubuntu releases, updating the lin_tape driver is the sole missing link to unblocking our OS modernization and security compliance efforts.

Thank you for your inquiry regarding updated Ubuntu support. Requests of this nature fall outside the scope of the IBM Ideas platform, as they represent an interoperability issue that must be addressed through the SSIC process.

Please submit a SCORE RPQ to request support for a production configuration that is not currently listed as standard support in the IBM System Storage Interoperation Center through the following link-> https://www-40.ibm.com/systems/support/storage/scorerpq/int/logon.do
