IBM System Storage Ideas Portal

This portal is to open public enhancement requests against IBM System Storage products. To view all of your ideas submitted to IBM, create and manage groups of Ideas, or create an idea explicitly set to be either visible by all (public) or visible only to you and IBM (private), use the IBM Unified Ideas Portal (https://ideas.ibm.com).

Shape the future of IBM!

Status Not under consideration

Improve data collector health status indicators, and alert about data collector health issues.

In Storage Insights, problems exist where the workload balancing algorithm moves all workload to one data collector, because the other data collectors get into a state where they are “alive” enough to respond to the heartbeat, but not alive enough to actually process any probes or Performance Monitoring jobs.

While in this state, the data collectors show a status of “running” with a green check mark next to them in the UI, but show little to no assigned workload.

Storage Insights users have no indication of data collector problems until finally the last data collector fails and we then see all monitoring jobs expire/fail.

My suggestions involve handling this in a more proactive manner: Make the “status” column meaningful (show a status of degraded or error for data collectors that are “alive” but not doing anything), and also notify users via in-app notification.

The outcome from this enhancement is better alerting about problems which will help to avoid long periods of failed data collection, but also will drive customers to report this problem to support sooner, so that IBM will have better ability to identify root causes behind this situation.

This is effectively a duplicate of SSI-I-68, so adding some comments to that and closing this request out.
