IBM System Storage Ideas Portal

This portal is to open public enhancement requests against IBM System Storage products. To view all of your ideas submitted to IBM, create and manage groups of Ideas, or create an idea explicitly set to be either visible by all (public) or visible only to you and IBM (private), use the IBM Unified Ideas Portal (https://ideas.ibm.com).

Shape the future of IBM!

We invite you to shape the future of IBM, including product roadmaps, by submitting ideas that matter to you the most. Here's how it works:

Search existing ideas

Start by searching and reviewing ideas and requests to enhance a product or service. Take a look at ideas others have posted, and add a comment, vote, or subscribe to updates on them if they matter to you. If you can't find what you are looking for,

Post your ideas
  1. Post an idea.

  2. Get feedback from the IBM team and other customers to refine your idea.

  3. Follow the idea through the IBM Ideas process.

Fusion Topology/Zone-Aware Zero-touch Backup and Restore for Multi Zone Environments

Requirement

In a multi-zone deployment of IBM Concert Operate and IBM Fusion, backup and restore operations should function end-to-end without requiring manual intervention.Currently, successful backup and restore workflows require manual actions:

For Backup :

  • Manual binding of otherwise unbound volumes before backup can be completed.

For Restore :

  • Manual redistribution of workloads and volumes across availability zones using Transform CRs during the restore process.

To support Enterprise-grade Backup & Restore, and Disaster Recovery, IBM Fusion should become Zone/topology-aware and automatically ensure that:

  • No manual volume binding is required before backup.

Restored workloads and all associated volumes are placed within the same availability zone. Cluster wide storage with unrestricted cross-zone mounting is not allowed due to the additional latency and connection overhead .

Volume placement respects CSI topology constraints.

Backup and restore operations can be executed without additional manual configuration, Transform CRs, or workarounds.

Multi-volume applications (for example, Postgres deployments with separate Data and WAL volumes) are restored consistently within a single availability zone.

Expected Outcome

A fully automated, zero-touch backup and restore experience for multi-zone environments, eliminating manual volume binding, manual Transform CR creation for volume and workload redistribution, and other recovery-time interventions.

This enhancement would reduce operational risk, accelerate recovery operations, improve reliability during DR scenarios, and enable a true Enterprise grade backup and restore solution for production multi-zone deployments.
