IBM System Storage Ideas Portal

This portal is to open public enhancement requests against IBM System Storage products. To view all of your ideas submitted to IBM, create and manage groups of Ideas, or create an idea explicitly set to be either visible by all (public) or visible only to you and IBM (private), use the IBM Unified Ideas Portal (https://ideas.ibm.com).

Shape the future of IBM!

We invite you to shape the future of IBM, including product roadmaps, by submitting ideas that matter to you the most. Here's how it works:

Search existing ideas

Start by searching and reviewing ideas and requests to enhance a product or service. Take a look at ideas others have posted, and add a comment, vote, or subscribe to updates on them if they matter to you. If you can't find what you are looking for,

Post your ideas
  1. Post an idea.

  2. Get feedback from the IBM team and other customers to refine your idea.

  3. Follow the idea through the IBM Ideas process.

New option to exclude compressed files from compression

When using client compression there are files that are already compressed that will (probably) grow in size.
There is the ability to exclude files from compression processing with the exclude.compression option. However this requires a separate line for each type of compressed file e,g.
exclude.compression /…/*.gz
exclude.compression /…/*.Z
….
As there are @200 different compressed file suffices this makes for very large client options sets and can be a processing overhead as each exclude needs to be processed when a file is a backup candidate.
This change is to have a new feature to exclude compressed files from compression processing.
There are 2 possibilities:
1. A new exclude option exclude.compressed /dir - this will exclude any compressed files in /dir from compression.
2. A new option DontCompressCompressedFiles – this will exclude any compressed files from compression.

In both cases the definition of what is a compressed file is defined by IBM and is not configurable.
The option should be available in the client option set.

The main problem reported by this RFE is resolved with Spectrum Protect's movement to LZ4 compression. LZ4 compression will prevent the data from expanding. In addition, LZ4 compression is very efficient with low processing overhead.

Due to processing by IBM, this request was reassigned to have the following updated attributes:
Brand - Servers and Systems Software
    Product family - Storage
Product - Tivoli Storage Manager (TSM) Family

For recording keeping, the previous attributes were:
    Brand - Tivoli
    Product family - Storage
Product - Tivoli Storage Manager (TSM) Family

Thank you for submitting the request. This is a recognized requirement and a solution appears to be desirable. This request is not in a committed release plan for this year,
but the theme is aligned with our multi-year strategy, and will be a candidate for our future release. IBM’s plans may change and no commitment is made that a solution will be provided.

We based our decisions on what to exclude from compression based on the information contained on:

Thank you for submitting this request. It would be helpful if you could provide more information to help us make progress in our consideration of this enhancement. Can you provide more examples of files or application files that are compressed that should be taken into consideration beyond just gzip, zip, or etc. file? We would want to be as generally complete as appropriate in our implementation to avoid iterating too much on file types and such once a solution was delivered.
