Faster Single File Restore (TSM for VE) from Tape (Block Level Backup IFE)

With large capacity VM's (several TB's) that also have a requirement for long retention policies, tape is still the most cost effective storage medium.
In a commercially driven environment, it is very difficult to convince customers that we require >100TB of disk to store the backups of their VM's.

The current single file restore method (TSM for VE) from tape is incredibly inefficient. When backup data resides on just 2-3 tapes, we have seen these tapes mounted upwards to 100 times. It must be possible to make this process more efficient. Either by holding a table of contents in TSM DB, or by reading the tapes only once and staging the relevant data on temporary disk pool

Thank you for submitting this request. While consistent with our current product direction, We are not currently planning on any optimization enhancements when restoring files residing on physical tape with DP for VMware in the next release or two.  If, after our next release of TSM, you would like this requirement to be re-considered, please reopen it in RFE and we will again consider it. Thank you for your commitment to TSM and for your support in moving the product forward.
