IBM System Storage Ideas Portal

This portal is to open public enhancement requests against IBM System Storage products. To view all of your ideas submitted to IBM, create and manage groups of Ideas, or create an idea explicitly set to be either visible by all (public) or visible only to you and IBM (private), use the IBM Unified Ideas Portal (https://ideas.ibm.com).

Shape the future of IBM!

We invite you to shape the future of IBM, including product roadmaps, by submitting ideas that matter to you the most. Here's how it works:

"MAXPROCESS" Parameter for "BACKUP NODE" Command

Presently, when issuing the "BACKUP NODE" command against a NetApp or System-N filer (without specifying a volume, or volumes), a backup process for every volume on the filer is immediately, and concurrently, created. The filer, of course, cannot support more than a few dozen concurrent backups of any given type (SnapMirror, in our scenario), and mass failure results on filers such as ours, having several hundred volumes.

The suggested recommendation today is to script groups of volumes for backup, but requires fairly vigilant upkeep of the script.

A far-better solution would be to simply limit the number of concurrent backup processes for the "BACKUP NODE" command with a "MAXPROCESS" parameter, which is what is being requested.

Wait, you marked this as delivered, and your solution is "Don't back up multiple filesystems at the same time."

That does not in any way deliver what the user requested.

At 8.1.3, we STILL have to manually manage the number of NDMP processes. We can create server scripts to fire off several, then wait for them all, then fire off the next batch. This still means manual tweaking constantly as some jobs run longer, and end up as the only session still running.

What the user asked for is the ability to have a master BACKUP NODE process that keeps feeding in new child BACKUP NODE subprocesses so that you can still just run one command with 20 filesystems, and let it manage how many run at once.

Using DOMAIN.NAS does not in any way do that, and marking this as "delivered" is a weasel way to prevent "reconsideration" for things that you don't want to do.

Due to processing by IBM, this request was reassigned to have the following updated attributes:
Brand - Servers and Systems Software
    Product family - Storage
Product - Tivoli Storage Manager (TSM) Family

For recording keeping, the previous attributes were:
    Brand - Tivoli
    Product family - Storage
Product - Tivoli Storage Manager (TSM) Family

Thank you for submitting the request. One method you could use is to use the command line client to initiate the backups and take advantage of the "domain.nas" option in the client options file. This option allows a user to specify which filesystems on a filer to backup. So if the domain.nas option specified 3 filespaces and the command was "dsmc backup nas" the operation would backup only those three filesystems.

Here is the section in the client pubs:
