IBM System Storage Ideas Portal

This portal is to open public enhancement requests against IBM System Storage products. To view all of your ideas submitted to IBM, create and manage groups of Ideas, or create an idea explicitly set to be either visible by all (public) or visible only to you and IBM (private), use the IBM Unified Ideas Portal (https://ideas.ibm.com).

Shape the future of IBM!

We invite you to shape the future of IBM, including product roadmaps, by submitting ideas that matter to you the most. Here's how it works:

Search existing ideas

Start by searching and reviewing ideas and requests to enhance a product or service. Take a look at ideas others have posted, and add a comment, vote, or subscribe to updates on them if they matter to you. If you can't find what you are looking for,

Post your ideas
  1. Post an idea.

  2. Get feedback from the IBM team and other customers to refine your idea.

  3. Follow the idea through the IBM Ideas process.

Improve TSM Replication over high latency WAN links

I would like a TSM server option that would allow TSM to use as many parallel TCP connections as possible in order to maximize throughput along a Long Fat Pipe (WAN link w/ >60ms latency between TSM servers). Alternatively, I would like the TSM servers to utilize an alternate protocol rather than TCP that will improve throughput speeds during replication.

At SP 8.1.5, on AIX, we use large tcp buffers at the OS side, and large numbers of replication sessions.

We use TCPWIN 0 on the servers, 1 meg for tcp_sendspace and tcp_recvspace at the OS side (maximum no value), and 4 megs on the adapters (going larger caused slower, and erratic transfer rates).

On a 3000 mile link, 168ms round trip, 10gbit link, we are able to get 95MB/sec/session, or 650MB/sec aggregate at the OS.

The limit of one session per filespace is still in SP, but when we use REPL NOD VM* MAXSESS=99 and a second REPL NODE * MAXSESS=99, we get over 160 sessions. We're able to get in the 470MB/sec range.

Due to processing by IBM, this request was reassigned to have the following updated attributes:
Brand - Servers and Systems Software
    Product family - Storage
Product - Tivoli Storage Manager (TSM) Family

For recording keeping, the previous attributes were:
    Brand - Tivoli
    Product family - Storage
Product - Tivoli Storage Manager (TSM) Family

Thank you for submitting the request. There are multiple improvement items we are evaluating to improve the performance of TSM node replication and parallel TCP connections is one of the options for implementation.
