TSM for VE needs better VM selection/filtering mechanisms.

When creating a new backup schedule in the TSM for VE plugin in VMware (v 6.4.0.1), the user's options for selecting VM's to be backed up are severely limited.

The first limitation is the view by host or datastore. If you want to backup particular VM's you must know which host or datastore the VM resides in (or manually search through objects until you find it). A view should be added to allow the user to see all VM's at once.

The user is only able to backup a limited number of VM's when picking individual VM's. This is because of the 512 character limit on the filter string. I have needs to backup individual VM's scattered throughout several hosts that (when all selected) exceed this 512 character limit.

As a workaround to the above mentioned limitation, I've created special folders in vCenter containing the VM's that I want to back up, and created schedules directly on the TSM server (because the plugin won't allow it) to use the 'DOMAIN.VMFULL VMFolder=FolderName' filter to select my VM's for backup. It works, but it adds unnecessary complexity to my vCenter Folder structure.

A better method would be to select or filter VM's based on attribute value. Where a user could define an attribute for a VM in vCenter and assign it a particular value, and then use the TSM for VE plugin to backup all VM's with a given attribute and value. Something that might look like... 'DOMAIN.VMFULL VMAttribute=Backup:VTL' or 'DOMAIN.VMFULL VMAttribute=Backup:Tape' where 'Backup' is the name of the attribute and 'VTL' or 'Tape' is the value of the attribute.

Anyway, the TSM for VE plugin still needs a bit of work to make it awesome.

I also don't like that you can't follow the status of a scheduled job. You can follow the status on 'Run Now' jobs, but it would also be nice to see what's happening during a scheduled job.

    Refer to my PMR 79801,442,000:
    Problem title
    Nested Vmfolders
    .
    Problem description and business impact
I was thinking of using VMFOLDER to select VMs. While trying to figure
out the syntax for specifying a nested folder, the link (http://www-01.
    ibm.com/support/docview.wss?uid=swg21432938) was brought to my
    attention. Consider these two folders:
    1. vc-un1.unch.unc.edu/UNCHCS/Non Production/Sentry
    2. vc-un1.unch.unc.edu/UNCHCS/Production/Sentry
How do I specify folder 2 and not folder 1?

Due to processing by IBM, this request was reassigned to have the following updated attributes:
Brand - Servers and Systems Software
    Product family - Storage
Product - Tivoli Storage Manager (TSM) Family

For recording keeping, the previous attributes were:
    Brand - Tivoli
    Product family - Storage
Product - Tivoli Storage Manager (TSM) Family

Thank you for submitting the request. This is a recognized requirement and a solution appears to be desirable.
IBM’s plans may change and no commitment is made that a solution will be provided.
We have plans to integrate with the vSphere Web Client that we could leverage VMware's search capabilities to look for a vm without knowing where it resides. We are also considering lifting this restriction of backing up limited number of VMs in the short term; The request for VE plugin is a very valid requirement and is an uncommitted candidate for the future.
