Tivoli Storage Manager 6.2.3 changed the Spectralogic library fo mixed media requiring an 8 character barcode

We are all LTO tape shop. Our Spectra T series libraries are configured to see only 6 barcode characters. This is due to a legacy requirement of other libraries only reading 6 characters. As we'vre moved on to new libraries, we have kept the same 6 barcode characters.

I am setting up a new TSM 6.3.2 EE environment. I defined my Specyta T950 which has 24 LTO-5 tape drives. I try to check in my tapes and it fails.

ANR8847E No DLT-type drives are currently available in library ND703-STLB03.

I open a ticket. I am told that a change was made to the Spectra device which made it a mixed media device. Because my library only reports 6 characters, the default device is DLT.

This silo doesn't even support DLT drives.

I can't change to 8 characters because this would be a global change to the library and impact other backup products. It also impacts us accross our who enterprise where we were looking to move from 5.x to 6.3.

We backup over 40TB per day. We have 4000+ clients. 20+ TSM environments.10,000+ LTO cartridges. 15 tape libraries.

There needs to be some way to allow us to continue with 6 characters. I can't see us moving to 8.
