IBM System Storage Ideas Portal

This portal is to open public enhancement requests against IBM System Storage products. To view all of your ideas submitted to IBM, create and manage groups of Ideas, or create an idea explicitly set to be either visible by all (public) or visible only to you and IBM (private), use the IBM Unified Ideas Portal (https://ideas.ibm.com).

Shape the future of IBM!

We invite you to shape the future of IBM, including product roadmaps, by submitting ideas that matter to you the most. Here's how it works:

Search existing ideas

Start by searching and reviewing ideas and requests to enhance a product or service. Take a look at ideas others have posted, and add a comment, vote, or subscribe to updates on them if they matter to you. If you can't find what you are looking for,

Post your ideas
  1. Post an idea.

  2. Get feedback from the IBM team and other customers to refine your idea.

  3. Follow the idea through the IBM Ideas process.

TSM Client session handling

It appears that TSM session handling for DB2 database (and for other DBs as well) is based on data received from TSM client. If the no data is received from client node TSM assumes client is not responding and terminates the client database backup session.

There are few cases when the DB backup is running fine but it has no data to be sent to TSM server. For example: Case of DB2 Incremental backup. By design it only sends the changed pages from table space. DB2 backup read all pages of tablespace upto high water mark and if no changed page is found for duration set by COMMTIMEOUT, TSM server assume client is not responding and terminate the running backup session.

Another case is, there is lot of free space in table space below high water mark. DB2 by design read all pages up to high water mark. It looks like free pages do not actually send data to TSM. So if db2 backup application is continuously scanning free pages for period more then COMMTIMEOUT, TSM server assumes client is not responding and terminates the session.

Above cases inform there are situations when a perfectly running database backup session may not send data to TSM. I believe session handling mechanism which currently appears to be based on data received at TSM server needs to be smarter. If DB2 database backup is actually running it should be able to figure out if db2 backup application is still running and should not terminate it.

Not sure, how to implement it, I am not aware about TSM design. However here is my imagination: if COMMTIMEOUT is exceeded a new API is called on TSM client to check db2 backup status. If it matches the pre-recorded backup application handle and also matches the duration of running backup session then server can continue waiting for another COMMTIMEOUT. The new API need to make call to database which may me pretty new addition in TSM client functionality. In theory this type of reverse call (TSM client calling db2 command) is possible; security consideration needs to be taken care of, like it would need user ID and password to call DB2.

Due to processing by IBM, this request was reassigned to have the following updated attributes:
Brand - Servers and Systems Software
    Product family - Storage
Product - Tivoli Storage Manager (TSM) Family

For recording keeping, the previous attributes were:
    Brand - Tivoli
    Product family - Storage
Product - Tivoli Storage Manager (TSM) Family

Thank you for submitting the request. This is a recognized requirement and a solution appears to be desirable. This request is not in a committed release plan for next year,
but the theme is aligned with our multi-year strategy, and will be a candidate for our future release. IBM’s plans may change and no commitment is made that a solution will be provided.
