Limit memory usage of dsmls

"dsmls -R", called at the root directory of a file system tree with many entries, may crash the system (SLES 11 SP1 with GPFS).
In the scenario of PMR 09701,SGC,724 the dsmls process consumed so much kernel memory, that Linux killed the GPFS daemon and the system became unusable.
Proposal: dsmls should have an internal (possibly configurable) limit on the amount of file system entries for which information is collected at a time.
