IBM System Storage Ideas Portal

This portal is to open public enhancement requests against IBM System Storage products. To view all of your ideas submitted to IBM, create and manage groups of Ideas, or create an idea explicitly set to be either visible by all (public) or visible only to you and IBM (private), use the IBM Unified Ideas Portal (https://ideas.ibm.com).

Shape the future of IBM!

TSM for VE: Virtualized Application Support

Currently the vStorage API for Data Protection creates VMware snapshots before TSM moves the data to TSM Pools. These VMware snapshots are able to create a filesystem data consistency or an application consistency if the application is VSS aware. But in order to have the possibility to perform point-in-time, or rollforward log recovery or application consistent backups of non-VSS applications (like SAP, DB2, Domino, older Oracle versions, all non-Windows applications) TSM for VE must be able to make these applications consistent before the VMware snapshot is done.

Following idea:
1) Build agents which are deployed within the virtual machine where the according application is running (e.g. modified TDPs)
2) This agent is able to communicate with TSM for VE which runs on the consolidated vStorage Server.
3) Before TSM for VE runs a backup of the VM, it should talk to the agent within this virtual machine first (to make the application within the VM consistent) , before the VMware snapshot is initiated.

Same for Restore:
1) TSM for VE restores the whole virtual machine (inclusive the according agent for the application within the VM)
2) After restore, TSM for VE talks to that agent within the VM to perform a rollforward log recovery.

Idea priority High

Due to processing by IBM, this request was reassigned to have the following updated attributes:
Brand - Servers and Systems Software
    Product family - Storage
Product - Tivoli Storage Manager (TSM) Family

For recording keeping, the previous attributes were:
    Brand - Tivoli
    Product family - Storage
Product - Tivoli Storage Manager (TSM) Family

While we continue to make incremental improvements for some of our agents hosted in virtual environments, unfortunately we will not be implementing the improvements as suggested in the next year. Since the creation of this request there has been some guidance provided in a recent whitepaper that is a worthwhile look. You can find a link to the paper here providing an example : https://ibm.biz/TSMVirtualProtectionMSSQL.

Thank you for submitting this enhancement request, as you note, TSM for VE can leverage existing mechanisms today in order to quiesce applications running inside a guest VMs, we are planning to enhance our support for applications running within a guest to provide a better solution for our customers. this future function will address both backup and recovery needs. please note that the implementation wouldn't necessarily follow your implementation ideas but it will provide a similar functionality from the end-user's perspective.
