IBM System Storage Ideas Portal

This portal is to open public enhancement requests against IBM System Storage products. To view all of your ideas submitted to IBM, create and manage groups of Ideas, or create an idea explicitly set to be either visible by all (public) or visible only to you and IBM (private), use the IBM Unified Ideas Portal (https://ideas.ibm.com).

Shape the future of IBM!

We invite you to shape the future of IBM, including product roadmaps, by submitting ideas that matter to you the most. Here's how it works:

Search existing ideas

Start by searching and reviewing ideas and requests to enhance a product or service. Take a look at ideas others have posted, and add a comment, vote, or subscribe to updates on them if they matter to you. If you can't find what you are looking for,

Post your ideas
  1. Post an idea.

  2. Get feedback from the IBM team and other customers to refine your idea.

SP server command to remove a directory from devclass file storage pools

A Storage Protect (SP) server storage pool of device class FILE (FILE_OLD) may use multiple directories (filesystems) as defined by the device class FILE (FILE_OLD).
Today there is no direct method available which allows to remove a directory from the device class FILE (FILE_OLD) or from a FILE storage pool (FILE_STGP_OLD).

One method available today may be to

  1. define a new device class FILE_NEW of type FILE which is using less or other directories than the already existing device class FILE_OLD.
  2. define a new storage pool FILE_STGP_NEW using the new device class FILE_NEW.
  3. update storage pool FILE_STGP_OLD with NEXTSTGP=FILE_STGP_NEW
  4. migrate stgpool FILE_STGP_OLD

This required moving ALL data in storage pool FILE_STGP_OLD to the new storage pool FILE_STGP_NEW.

In case we like to remove only one directory from the FILE_STGP_OLD it would be more efficient to move only the data which resides in the directory to be removed to other directories usable by the file storage pool FILE_STGP_OLD.
This could be realized, for example, by

  • updating the storage pool directory to be removed to read-only (to prevent creation of new files and insertion of new client data)
  • moving the complete file storage pool files from the directory to be removed into one of the remaining directories or
moving storage objects to new files into one of the remaining directories to include space reclamation

An idea for a SP server command would be, for example,

REMOVE STGPOOLDIR <stgpool_name> <directory_name> [RECLAIM=Yes|No]

This command should

  1. set <stgpool_name> <directory_name> to read-only
  2. move all data from <stgpool_name> <directory_name> into other directories of <stgpool_name>, optional with reclaiming space

After the directory is empty because all data of all storage pools was moved away, UPDATE DEVCLASS should allow to remove the directory from the FILE device class.
