Automate vCenter certificate import into Data Protection for VMware GUI truststore during Installation/Upgrade

Starting from Data Protection for VMware 8.1.23 and later, administrators must manually perform additional post-installation/post-upgrade configuration to establish trusted communication between the Data Protection for VMware vSphere GUI and VMware vCenter.

Current documented process requires importing the vCenter certificate into the Data Protection for VMware GUI truststore after installation or upgrade.

https://www.ibm.com/docs/en/spfve/8.1.27?topic=cssdpv-configuring-data-protection-vmware-vsphere-gui-communication-vcenter-server

If this manual step is missed, customers frequently experience issues such as:

  • vSphere GUI inaccessible

  • vCenter plugin registration failures

  • GUI communication failures

  • SSL handshake errors

  • PKIX path building failures

  • Missing Data Protection settings in vCenter plugin

  • Repeated support cases after maintenance activities

Requested enhancement:

Provide an automated mechanism during installation and upgrade to detect and import the vCenter certificate chain into the Data Protection for VMware GUI truststore.

Possible implementation options:

  • Installer automatically discovers configured vCenter endpoints and imports certificates

  • Upgrade utility performs truststore synchronization

  • Configuration wizard includes automatic certificate retrieval/import

Expected Benefits:

  • Eliminate manual post-upgrade activities

  • Reduce plugin/GUI issues after upgrades
