Add entry to a vm's filespace that will indicate its state

We monitor current vmware backup by checking filespaces for last backup date.  When that date is no longer updated for a few days, we record an event (an error) and someone must check why it is longer being back'ed up.  Several reasons for this exist.

  • vm has been deleted
  • vm has been renamed and kept ID (typically something like *_OLD, *_ToBeDeleted or something else)
  • vm has moved to a less frequent schedule (from daily backup to weekly or every 14 days
  • vm has been removed from backup schedule (vm exist, but does no longer require backup)

It will make monitoring in an enterprise system easier if we know the current state of a vm.  The datamover already triggers updates for occupancy, last backup date/time, summary and so forth.  With this new field, we can eliminate lots alarms/event simply by checking this new entry.

We suggest that a field be added to the table filespaces where vm state/schedule can be visible.  Something like

Virtual Machine State (vmstate) = (one of below)

Assigned schedule (SCHED=actual schedule used to backup vm or NONE)

Vm exist as a new name but same ID (ERROR=NEWNAME)

Vm no longer exist in vcenter (ERROR=REMOVED)

Kind rgds,

Håkon
