Enable NDMP NAS Restore to Alternate Filer Without Modifying Production Datamover Configuration

Background / Context

The customer currently, restoring NDMP NAS backups to an alternate NetApp filer requires modifying the production datamover configuration (IP address and drive path).

As documented in the IBM technote:
https://www.ibm.com/support/pages/restoring-ndmp-node-file-system-alternate-nas-filer

the supported workaround involves:

  • Pausing backups on the source filer (filerA)
  • Reconfiguring the datamover definition of filerA to point to filerB
  • Adjusting mover drive paths accordingly
  • Executing the restore using the original node name

This approach forces the restore to target the alternate filer (filerB), but introduces a critical limitation:
Backups for the production NAS (filerA) cannot run during the restore operation.

Problem Statement

The current behavior prevents concurrent operations because:

  • The datamover configuration is effectively “repurposed” for restore
  • Production backup schedules must be suspended
  • Operational risk increases due to prolonged backup gaps

Customer Requirement

Provide a supported mechanism to:

  • Restore NDMP NAS data to an alternate filer (filerB)
  • Without modifying the production datamover definition (filerA)
  • Without interrupting ongoing backups on the source NAS
  • Maintain isolation between backup and restore operations
  • Enhance or introduce something similar to -fromnode options we can use for SP CLIENT
