IBM System Storage Ideas Portal

This portal is to open public enhancement requests against IBM System Storage products. To view all of your ideas submitted to IBM, create and manage groups of Ideas, or create an idea explicitly set to be either visible by all (public) or visible only to you and IBM (private), use the IBM Unified Ideas Portal (https://ideas.ibm.com).

Shape the future of IBM!

Implement a Master Summary Process for GENERATE DEDUPSTATS Triggered by Storage Rules

Current Behavior: Currently, when running GENERATE DEDUPSTATS via a Storage Rule (stgrule), the system generates X number of worker processes based on the MAXPROCESS parameter. Each of these individual processes only reports the status and progress for the specific node or filespace it is actively processing. There is no central visibility into the overall progress of the Storage Rule's execution.

Desired Behavior: We are requesting the introduction of a "Master" or "Summary" process for GENERATE DEDUPSTATS when run via a Storage Rule. This summary process should act as an umbrella over the individual worker processes, providing real-time, aggregated statistics on the overall job.

Specifically, the summary process should display:

  • Total number of nodes/filespaces scheduled to be processed by the rule.
  • Total number of nodes/filespaces completed.
  • Total number of nodes/filespaces remaining.
  • Overall percentage of completion.

Business Justification / Value: Without a summary process, administrators cannot accurately gauge how far along the deduplication statistics generation is. This lack of visibility makes it difficult to make operational decisions—such as whether to wait for the process to finish before a maintenance window closes, or to safely kill the process and restart it later. Adding this feature will significantly improve administrative manageability and operational predictability.
