IBM System Storage Ideas Portal

This portal is to open public enhancement requests against IBM System Storage products. To view all of your ideas submitted to IBM, create and manage groups of Ideas, or create an idea explicitly set to be either visible by all (public) or visible only to you and IBM (private), use the IBM Unified Ideas Portal (https://ideas.ibm.com).

Shape the future of IBM!

We invite you to shape the future of IBM, including product roadmaps, by submitting ideas that matter to you the most. Here's how it works:

Search existing ideas

Start by searching and reviewing ideas and requests to enhance a product or service. Take a look at ideas others have posted, and add a comment, vote, or subscribe to updates on them if they matter to you. If you can't find what you are looking for,

Post your ideas
  1. Post an idea.

  2. Get feedback from the IBM team and other customers to refine your idea.

Library initialization at SP Server startup needs improvement

When a Storage Protect server is starting up, it is querying the inventory of each tape library defined to this Storage Protect server. the Storage Protect server is using a 256KB buffer to store the inventory information returned by the tape library. If the inventory information returned by the tape libraries is larger than the 256KB buffer, the Storage Protect server needs to process the 256KB of inventory information which is currently in the buffer, and then request the next 256KB of inventory data from the tape library, filling the 256KB buffer again, and so on ... The Storage Protect server needs to do this processing, until the complete tape library inventory is processed.
For tape library with a small and normal inventory up to 5000 storage slots the library initialization processing time is acceptable, but for virtual tape library with hundreds of drives and hundred-thousands of storage slots the library initialization processing time can delay the Storage Protect server startup time up to 30 minutes and more, which is not acceptable.

Library inventory initialization time for virtual tape libraries with a huge inventory at Storage Protect server startup needs to be improved to shorten Storage Protect server startup time to an acceptable level.
