Possibility for monthly and annual Archiving to TSM Tape

When configuring additional copies with offload on TSM, you can only use container pools for storage, but container pools cannot be migrated to tape. Since we only use all-flash SAN storage, this is a very costly solution.

For our customer, we need these additional copies monthly for 15 months in TSM container pools and the archive annually for 10 years. The only other way we could do to send data to tape is to archive everything monthly for 10 years, but this would use even more space since it would be 10 years for everything, including the monthly copies.

When configuring additional copies on the TSM repository server, we learned that these can only be offloaded to container pools. Due to the high cost of our flash storage, it would be very helpful to be able to make additional copies on tape instead of container pools.

    Absolutely, the additional Copys to Container Pools are very cost intensive. Also there is a Problem with Reports about Data going to Container Pools for single Server, The Costs of Data in Container Pools can not be set for single Servers, Conainer Pools are a big black box whre no accounting is possible.

    IBM has evaluated the request, and has determined that it can not be implemented at this time. We will review this request and update it in the future or a new one may be submitted in 6 months. This idea can still be voted on and votes will be taken into account.


    SPP provides SLA options to archive data to SP Tape for long term retention, as an alternative..
