Change the IBM Spectrum Protect Snapshot for Microsoft SQL Server autoselect to select backups prior to the backup endtime, instead of the backups prior to the backup starttime

The LSN (Log Sequence Number) checkpoint is created when an SQL backup concludes. This can lead to the autoselect function in IBM Spectrum Protect Snapshot for Microsoft SQL Server, selecting a log backup between the Difffuls or Full backups start and endtime will cause the wrong backup objects to be selected, only backup objects prior to the log backups end date shuld be selected.

 

Example:

Consider the following backup schedule:

  • Full Backup: Starts at 10:00, Ends at 12:00
  • Differential Backup: Starts at 15:00, Ends at 16:00
  • Log Backup: Starts at 15:30, Ends at 15:45

If you attempt to restore the log backup, the autoselect function might choose these backup objects:

  • Full Backup: Starts at 10:00
  • Differential Backup: Starts at 15:00
  • Log Backup: Starts at 15:30

While the restore of the full and differential backups would complete successfully, the restore of the log backup would fail because the differential backup completes at 16:00 (the new checkpoint is created at 16:00).

 

To address this issue, I recommend adjusting the autoselect function to choose backup objects where the backup end time is before the end time of the selected backup object.
