IBM System Storage Ideas Portal

This portal is to open public enhancement requests against IBM System Storage products. To view all of your ideas submitted to IBM, create and manage groups of Ideas, or create an idea explicitly set to be either visible by all (public) or visible only to you and IBM (private), use the IBM Unified Ideas Portal (https://ideas.ibm.com).

Shape the future of IBM!

Rebalance client nodes between multiple IBM Storage Protect instances to avoid storage capacity shortages and address performance concerns

IBM Storage Protect should provides a way to transparently rebalance nodes between multiple IBM Storage Protect instances to avoid storage capacity shortages and address performance concerns. Currently, IBM Storage Protect, unfortunately, lacks the concept of virtual clustering which forces a Backup/Archive (B/A) client to be tightly coupled with its server via the REGISTER NODE command and the destination server setting on the client option file (dsm.opt) so that there is no easy way to rebalance clients registration between multiple servers, say between ISP #1-1, #2-1, #3-1, .... This is a huge drawback for a data backup software that claims to be suited for a large and scalable enterprise environment. Precise capacity planning for a single server is often beaten by sudden huge backup demands by a few clients.

Currently, my Idea SPF-I-3343 (URL #1) is set the priority of low and the status of “Future consideration”. Because my customer is strongly demanding this functionality be delivered soon, IBM should respond to TMC with some positive wording about its probability.

As of today, the product can modify the client node’s dsm.sys (client option file) to include the REPLSERVERNAME stanza once the replication is configured (URL #1). Thus, it is technically possible to modify the client node’s dsm.sys to delete the source server’s definition (there’s a way).

If this functional modification is implemented, it is achievable to deliver the very functionality proposed in SPF-I-3343. It is also preferable if an administrative wrapper command is delivered as well but not mandatory in the initial delivery phase.

This request may not be delivered within the release currently under development, but the theme is aligned with the current multi-year strategy. IBM may consider and evaluate any RFE Community feedback for this request through activities such as voting. IBM will update this request in the future
