IBM System Storage Ideas Portal

This portal is to open public enhancement requests against IBM System Storage products. To view all of your ideas submitted to IBM, create and manage groups of Ideas, or create an idea explicitly set to be either visible by all (public) or visible only to you and IBM (private), use the IBM Unified Ideas Portal (https://ideas.ibm.com).

Shape the future of IBM!

We invite you to shape the future of IBM, including product roadmaps, by submitting ideas that matter to you the most. Here's how it works:

Search existing ideas

Start by searching and reviewing ideas and requests to enhance a product or service. Take a look at ideas others have posted, and add a comment, vote, or subscribe to updates on them if they matter to you. If you can't find what you are looking for,

Post your ideas
  1. Post an idea.

  2. Get feedback from the IBM team and other customers to refine your idea.

  3. Follow the idea through the IBM Ideas process.

SCDM: Import existing GMCV relationships into CDM - take ownership back after change

SCDM only lets you create brand new relationships when managing a GMCV configuration. If existing relationships are present on the volumes (even if they were created by SCDM) you have to destroy them and then recreate - full initial re-sync necessary - time wasting etc etc. Two use cases : 1. SCDM suddenly drops a relationship (seen in testing) and claims it can't continue - need a "override and take back control" option to re-start and incrementally resume from last freeze time. 2. Expanding volumes - in order to expand a GMCV volume (for example thin VMs over a thick LUN) the use case is commonly required by CMTG, you have to stop GMCV, remove the change volumes, expand the GM volumes (target then src) then add back CV's and finally resume GMCV - in this case SCDM throws a fit because it saw someone else stop the GMCV. Here we'd like a "just take back control and resume from last freeze point" 3. Importing an existing config to be controlled by SCDM.

SCDM already supports the creation of consistency groups. For any application, it creates a consistency group. In the storage controller workflow, there is an option to create a consistency group.

This request may not be delivered within the release currently under development, but the theme is aligned with the current multi-year strategy. IBM may consider and evaluate any RFE Community feedback for this request through activities such as voting. IBM will update this request in the future.

Semi-related, but CMTG have also reported incompatibilities when creating VMware Backups job definitions on SCDM when using VMware Site Recovery Manager (SRM). When a backup job identifies multiple volumes to be copied SCDM appears to do this sequentially whereas SRM flags errors indicating this should be done as part of a Consistency Group (CG).

SCDM, in addition to checking for existing GMCV relationships should also check to see if the relationship is in a CG.
