    Hi
This exists in competitive softwares, such as EMC Networker
restore -n to read data, but -n no write to disk
I think this is good not only to validate a backup, but also to estimate the restoration time by having the client restoring the data

This exists also for some databases (api) in Spectrum Protect, such as Oracle RMAN
    > restore database validate
But doesn’t exists for SQL Server , see verifyonly

At spictera using SPFS, one can see all backups using normal file system commands
    such as ls, dir
and can validate the data as the data is more easy to access as it doesn’t have to go via a TDP

so a SQL Server restore database verifyonly id possible

besides that it is more flexible, it is also more easy to move a particular backup version to other media if possible without having to restore, and backup again

    regards Tomas
