When working on verifying the fix for APAR IT35298 on case TS004574980 we noticed that the deb packages for the client doesn't properly restart the dsmcad service on upgrades. We were told that this wouldn't be fixed, and that the issue should be handled as an RFE (!)
On deb platforms (ie Ubuntu/Debian) it is expected that packages manage the services they provide. Especially, if for example dsmcad was running prior to upgrading the packages it should be running when package upgrades are complete.
Previously this was a smaller problem, as dsmcad was never killed during an upgrade it continued to run and perform backups with the upgraded client.
With the updated packages any running dsmcad is killed when the package is upgraded, but the service isn't restarted! This has the side effects that automated upgrade breaks backup, which is an unacceptable situation.
