Hardware snapshot for VMware backups

We use SP for VE for backing up VMs and it works great for normal sized VMs.
For VMs with big disks and high IO there is a performance penalty when there exists a vmware snapshot. The penalty is even bigger when removing the vmware snapshot and consolidating the vmdks. In our environment the backup could take 22 hours for a big VM and during that time the delta-disk for the snapshot was quite big. Deleting the snapshot and consolidating the vmdks could take 30-60 minutes.

With the possibility to hardware snapshots the vmware snapshot would only exist for a very short time and the disk consolidation would not be a performance problem.

We have tested the TSM FCM for VMware and it worked great. I was shocked when I understood it wasn't supported with newer versions of SP for VE.

I hoped that this would come as a supported function in SPP but sadly it is not there yet.

Our big VMs are running Windows and SQL with a lot of transactions going on 24/7.

This request may not be delivered within the release currently under development, but the theme is aligned with the current multi-year strategy. Please note that this function may be implemented in different components than requested. IBM may consider and evaluate any RFE Community feedback for this request through activities such as voting. IBM will update this request in the future.

Consider leveraging IBM Spectrum Copy Data Management to perform hardware-based snapshots of VMware environments.
