IBM System Storage Ideas Portal

This portal is to open public enhancement requests against IBM System Storage products. To view all of your ideas submitted to IBM, create and manage groups of Ideas, or create an idea explicitly set to be either visible by all (public) or visible only to you and IBM (private), use the IBM Unified Ideas Portal (https://ideas.ibm.com).

Shape the future of IBM!

We invite you to shape the future of IBM, including product roadmaps, by submitting ideas that matter to you the most. Here's how it works:

Search existing ideas

Start by searching and reviewing ideas and requests to enhance a product or service. Take a look at ideas others have posted, and add a comment, vote, or subscribe to updates on them if they matter to you. If you can't find what you are looking for,

Post your ideas
  1. Post an idea.

  2. Get feedback from the IBM team and other customers to refine your idea.

Ability to migrate TSM DB from AIX to x86 Linux server

Our Server Support team manages and supports hundreds of x86 Linux and MS Windows servers, and are very efficient and adept at doing so. They have retired all older Solaris and AIX servers. However, we still run our TSM servers on AIX, because that is where we started 20 years ago, and there has never been an easy way to migrate off of AIX to Linux.

With increasing security threats and an increasing need to keep applying security patches, we now feel a strong need to migrate our TSM servers off of AIX and onto a server platform that has better local support (i.e., x86 Linux). We will be faced with either migrating our existing TSM infrastructure to x86 Linux or, if that is too cumbersome, replacing TSM with something new.

We would like to see IBM add a capability to TSM to allow a TSM server to be migrated from AIX to x86 Linux (RedHat), by moving only the TSM database (backup/restore, or similar), and not having to export/import or otherwise move all of the data residing in storage pools. The idea is to have the new xLinux TSM server point to the same storage pools that the old AIX TSM server pointed to, and only have to migrate the TSM database from AIX to xLinux.

Note that we have considerable Archive data, so starting over with fresh backups would still be a considerable challenge.
